San Miguel sits at 6,200 feet in the central highlands of Mexico. It is warm and dry most of the year, the air is thin and clean, and the centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site of cantera stone and bougainvillea.
You can walk almost everywhere. The food is exceptional. The expat community is large enough to be welcoming and small enough that you'll see the same faces at the Tuesday market. Most people come for two weeks and start wondering, by week one, how to come back for two months.
